Hui O Laka- Koke’e Museum

Koke’e Museum is located in Koke’e State Park and is open year round from 10 am-4pm. Admission is free, however donations are accepted. If you would like a guided tour, a reservation is required and must be made at least two weeks in advance.

This unique museum offers natural and cultural information on the Hawaiian Archipelago and the Koke’e Natural History Museum offers various exhibitions, orientation and a self-guiding trail map through one of Kauai’s, as well as the world’s, most isolated and unique ecosystems. A museum store is on the premises, as well as a nice picnic area.

Kauai Museum

Located directly in Lihue, Kauai Museum is open Monday-Saturday from 10am-5pm (closed Sundays and major holidays). Guided tours are included with admission and begin at 10:30am Tuesday through Friday. Admission is as follows: general public $10, seniors $8, students aged 13-17 $6, children 6-12 $2, under 5 is free.

Enjoy a traditional museum filled with various exhibitions, artifacts, dioramas and murals featuring the people and culture that shaped Kauai. With a wide variety of activities and guided tours by a docent, you will enjoy learning about Kauai from a new perspective. We recommend allowing yourself at least 2 hours to enjoy the museum and walk through the various galleries. “The Story of Kauai” is a permanent collection displaying the geological wonders of the island, natural history, and the coming of the Hawaiian peoples.

Kilauea Point Natural History Museum

Located at the northernmost tip of Kauai, the Kilauea Point Natural History Museum sits on 203 gorgeous acres on a bluff and is at the site of the Kilauea Point Natural Wildlife Refuge. Admission is $5 for adults and free for children 16 and under. Lifetime passes are also available. The Wildlife Refuge opens from 10am-4pm (closed on federal holidays).

The Kilauea Lighthouse and Wildlife Refuge are the main focus of the area, along with providing natural sanctuaries for avian and marine life. Learn about areas native wildlife, geology, extensive ecosystems and preservation. Explore the lighthouse, wildlife refuge, and learn how you can do your part to preserve Kauai’s natural ecosystems and indigenous wildlife population.

National Tropical Botanical Garden

Located at the South Shore Visitor Center, the National Tropical Botanical Garden is open Monday-Friday from 8:00am-4:30pm.

Sitting on 2,000 acres, Hawaii’s most exotic and rare species and plants collected from the wild. Garden locations include McBryde Garden and Allerton Garden in South Shore Kauai, Limahuli Garden in North Shore Kauai, Kahanu Garden in East Shore Maui, and the Kampong in Miami, Florida.

Limahuli Garden

Open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:30am-4pm for both guided and self-guided tours. A self-guided tour takes about 1 and a half hours while a guided tour takes about 2 and a half hours. You walk in a loop ¾ of a mile and the trail is steep in some areas. Recommended attire includes walking shoes, long pants and/or mosquito repellant, a hat for shade and bottled water. Admission: Self-guided: Adults (13 yrs. and above) $15; children 12 yrs. and under free
Guided: Adults (13 yrs. and above) $30; children 10-12 yrs. $15. Only children 10 yrs. and above on tour. Reservations are required for a guided tour and self-guided tours are offered on a first come, first served basis.

Attractions around Puu Poa and Princeville

The Queen’s Bath is a short 3 minute drive from Puu Poa, located at the end of Punahele Road. Take a short hike by trail through some forest and over lava rocks to the famous Queen’s Bath, which is a sink hole surrounded by igneous rock and a fantastic natural swimming pool during the low-tide. The pool also acts as the home to small fish and ocean critters. This area is extremely dangerous during high tide and the winter months, so use caution if you decide to check it out.

The Kilauea Lighthouse and Wildlife Refuge are a short 15 minute drive. The North Shore boasts three beautiful botanical gardens: the Limahuli Garden in Haena, the Ahonui Botanical Garden located right in Princeville, and the Na Aina Kai Garden in Kilauea.

Kauai Mini Golf is located just outside of Kiluaea. Enjoy mini-golf like you’ve never played before because this mini-golf course has 18 holes, is located in a garden setting that represents the various eras of Hawaiian culture.
