Ringing in the New Year is a jovial celebration shared around the world.  There are many exciting places to celebrate the fresh beginnings and possibilities that the New Year promises.  Tokyo offers a day of parties, Beirut and London have large fireworks displays and New York has the famous ball drop in Times Square.  As one year ends and the opportunities of the New Year arrive around the world, the island of Kauai is one of the last places on Earth where you can enjoy the last moments of New Year’s Eve and greet the New Year.

On the gorgeous Garden Isle, you will have many choices for community New Year’s festivities.  If you would like to enjoy a celebration at one of Kauai’s fantastic resorts or luxurious hotels, please check with the resort or hotel for events, as the holiday gets closer.  Often resorts will have some sort of New Year’s party or event available, though details will not be made available until shortly before the event.  Check with your desired resort or hotel in advance, in case reservations are required.

Bursts of vivid color will be splashed upon the island sky to welcome the coming year.  One of the most popular New Year’s Eve fireworks displays is held at Poipu Beach Park.  Presented by Parrish Kauai, the Poipu Beach Resort Association and Kalapaki Joe’s, the yearly event is an island favorite.  Bring your family and friends to the South Shore, and join in the communal celebration of the year to come.

Kicking off the festivities at Poipu Beach Park, Kalapaki Joe’s Music Fest will begin at 5 PM.  Enjoy live music, including numerous local artists, such as Na Hoku Hanohano Award winning Anuhea, Kauai’s Revival, Dustin Thomas, and the Hawaiian legend of surfing, Titus Kinimaka.  Be sure to try some of the delicious food that will be available for purchase, from Kalapaki Joe’s and others.  After watching the last colorful sunset of the year, you will see the sky painted with brilliant colors yet again, as fireworks dance over the ocean.

The fireworks display at Poipu Beach Park will start at about 9:20 PM.  As this event is so popular, parking can be hard to find, if you do not arrive early.  Perhaps you would like to see the gorgeous lights, without the crowd at Poipu Beach Park.  Lucky for you, the fireworks can not only be seen from Poipu Beach Park and Poipu Beach, but also from Brennecke’s Beach, as well as the Marriott Waiohai, Kiahuna Plantation and Sheraton Kauai Resorts.  You may even want to look into a boat rental or charter, to see the display from the water, in which case you will want to be aware of any possible restricted areas, for your safety.

Anywhere on Kauai that you may find yourself ringing in the New Year, you will probably see and hear small fireworks announcing the New Year, throughout local neighborhoods.  If you would like to join in the fun of private New Year’s fireworks, you may purchase smaller consumer fireworks around the island.  While such fireworks are allowed in Hawaii, you will need a permit for most consumer fireworks, with the exception of some smaller novelty items.  As always, please be courteous of your neighbors and respectful of the health and safety of our community and island.  Be cautious of where and how you light fireworks, and take a moment to clean up any trash or residue that may be left behind, when you know that it is safe do to so.
